Immigration: The Thread that Holds Us Together is Being Unraveled

Our presenter, Susan Benner, has worked with the immigrant community in Ames for 20 years. She is currently involved with the Ames Sanctuary Interfaith Partnership, Ames Area Immigrant Network, and Ames Area Immigrant Emergency Fund. She also serves as co-coordinator for the lowa Migrant Movement for Justice Story County Immigration Clinics.

She will share definitions and concepts to help us understand the immigrant and refugee status. She will discuss how racism and demonization of immigrants and refugees is being used as a political weapon. She will bust myths about immigrants and refugees, sharing the realities, statistics, and humanizing these individuals who are members of our communities and workforce. There will also be a discussion of current ICE and Immigration enforcement across the country and in lowa. Finally, we will hear what we can do to support our immigrant neighbors.
